In Year 4 we continue to build upon the knowledge and skills they have learnt in previous years. The children will be involved with a variety of topic work throughout the year.

All Aboard...

ALL ABOARD – Year 4

During the summer term, the Year 4’s topic will be ‘All Aboard’. The year group will be sailing to Japan to explore its place in the world; its geographical features as well as it’s language; wonderful culture; deliciate foods; and tradition dress.

Throughtout the topic, most of the written work will be driven by the class text ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. The pupils will write: journals about the main character’s disappearance; diary entries of life at home; debate the idea of sailing around the world to write a balanced argument; and Haiku poems.  In design and Technology,  pupils will make Japanese fans and use specific painting techniques, in art and design, to create the national flower of Japan which isthe Cherry blossom, along with designing their own kimonos – the tradition dress.

So come along and join our amazing trip to… Japan.

Lights, Camra, Action

The Greatest Show

In Year 4, pupils will be exploring the circus and its traditions. They shall be researching its extraordinary history, as Victorian entertainment, and how it has evolved as a hot topic, for debate, surrounding the role of circus animals.

Using ‘The Greatest Showman’ as inspiration for their written work, pupils will engage in debates and consider whether animals should remain part of any circus entertainment. They will write persuasive letters expressing their views and opinions; and create non-chronological reports on the history of the circus.

Frozen in Time

Invaders and Settlers: Anglo-Saxon and Vikings

In Year 4, pupils will be exploring the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. The pupils will gain an understanding of chronology and be able to place the two periods of British history in a chronological framework. Throughout the term, pupils will investigate key historical events including the discovery of Sutton Hoo and learning about Viking Jorvik.

Throughout the term the children will be making various Anglo-Saxon and Viking crafts, including brooches and Viking Shields and helmets. In English we will be using the text ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ as an inspiration for our written work.
