The Role of the Governing Body
The Governing Body takes a strategic role in the running of the two schools as outlined in the Governance Handbook. This means the Governors work with the Executive Headteacher and Senior Management Team of each school to decide what they want the schools to achieve and set the framework for getting there by:
- Setting suitable aims and objectives
- Agreeing policies, targets and priorities
- Monitoring and reviewing the aims and objectives and whether the policies, targets and priorities are being achieved.
The Governing Body acts as a 'critical friend' to the Executive Headteacher and staff by providing advice and support. It does this by offering constructive advice, a sounding board for ideas, a second opinion on proposals and help when needed. A critical friend may also challenge, ask questions, seek information, improve proposals and so seek to arrive at the best solution.
The Boards Strategic Role
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
- Holding (executive) leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff;
- Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.
