Governing Body

Gardners Lane Primary School and Oakwood Primary are federated and from the beginning of September 2012 have shared a Governing Body.

The Role of the Governing Body

The Governing Body takes a strategic role in the running of the two schools.  This means the Governors work with the Headteachers and Senior Leadership Team of each school to decide what they want the schools to achieve and set the framework for getting there by:

  • Setting suitable aims and objectives
  • Agreeing policies, targets and priorities
  • Monitoring and reviewing the aims and objectives and whether the policies, targets and priorities are being achieved.

The Governing Body acts as a 'critical friend' to the Headteachers and staff by providing advice and support.  It does this by offering constructive advice, a sounding board for ideas, a second opinion on proposals and help when needed.  A critical friend may also challenge, ask questions, seek information, improve proposals and so seek to arrive at the best solution.

The Boards Strategic Role

Governors serve the school community by providing strategic leadership, support and constructive challenge. Their core responsibilities include:

  • Setting the school's vision, ethos and strategic direction.
  • Holding school leaders to account for the educational performance of all pupils and for the quality of teaching and learning. 
  • Monitoring the school's progress towards its improvement priorities and ensuring that outcomes for pupils continue to improve.
  • Overseeing the school's finances and ensuring that public money is used effectively, efficiently and in the best interests of pupils. 
  • Ensuring the school fulfils its statutory duties, including safeguarding, health and safety, equality and compliance requirements. 
  • Supporting and challenging school leaders through informed questioning, review of evidence and regular evaluation of the school's performance. 
  • Engaging with stakeholders, including pupils, parents, staff and the wider community, to help ensure the school remains responsive to local needs. 

Governors are volunteers who bring a wide range of skills, knowledge and experience to the role. Working collectively as a governing board, they are committed to ensuring that every child receives an excellent education within a safe, inclusive and nurturing environment.

 

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff;
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.
