Gardners Lane Primary School Curriculum Overview

Our school Vision
'Our vision is to raise the aspiration and achievement of the children and families across the Cheltenham Community.'
Mission
We will make the education and development of all pupils our priority. We are accountable for achieving the highest possible standards of work and in our professional conduct. We will act with honesty and integrity, be reflective and forge professional relationships working in the best interests of our pupils.
A successful curriculum is the key to any child’s accelerated learning and progress. In addition, it enhances the children’s enjoyment and valuing of education. It leads to the child’s independent ability to become a life-long learner and encourages participation in further and higher education. With this in mind, we strive to provide a curriculum that motivates and challenges every pupil to achieve their best learning. We aim to provide a curriculum through which children look forward to coming to school every day and go home, telling of their experiences and learning.
What approach does the school take to delivering the curriculum?
The Creative Curriculum at Gardners Lane Primary School gives children opportunities to learn, build on and develop new skills and addresses the requirements of the National Curriculum. Children are exposed to a range of subjects and activities which allows them to experience different topics and learning styles in a fun and engaging way.
Primarily, we teach through a topic-based approach, making links across the subjects, under each topic theme. Learning in all areas is differentiated, according to each child’s current attainment and potential ability. Occasionally, we move away from topic-based learning where we feel this will be beneficial. For example, in our daily maths teaching, we only link to a topic if it is entirely sensible to do so.
This means that our curriculum constantly evolves to provide the best for our pupils.
The class pages show the 'Big Ideas' for each learning unit and what will be covered within this. Our school values are also incorporated into the planning along with a 'Wow activity' to engage children.
